History of Loreto Limuru
Loreto High School Limuru, a prestigious institution in Kenya, was founded in 1936 by the Loreto Sisters, a congregation of Catholic nuns under the leadership of Mother Mary Joseph. The school was established to provide quality education to African girls during a time when educational opportunities for women were limited. Its foundation was rooted in the Sisters’ mission to empower young women through education, which was in line with the ideals of their founder, Mary Ward.
Initially, Loreto Limuru began as a primary school but quickly grew into a secondary school, gaining recognition for academic excellence and holistic education. Over the years, it became a leading institution in shaping the lives of countless girls, many of whom have made significant contributions in various sectors both within Kenya and internationally.
Loreto Limuru’s commitment to the development of the “whole person” is reflected in its emphasis on academics and spiritual, moral, and social education. The school prides itself on instilling values of integrity, discipline, leadership, and service to others, which have become hallmarks of a Loreto Limuru graduate.
Today, Loreto Limuru continues to be a beacon of excellence, consistently ranking among the top-performing schools in Kenya. With a history of over eight decades, the school remains committed to its founding principles of providing an all-rounded education to young women, preparing them to be leaders and changemakers in society.
Loreto High School Limuru’s legacy stands strong, upholding its motto, Cruci Dum Spiro Fido (In the Cross, While I Breathe, I Trust), a testament to the enduring faith and resilience that has defined its journey.
